STYLE: What “R” The Rules?

It’s been my observation that “The Rules” for interior design and style have changed significantly since I was a child.

I inherited my Moms great sense of style!

I remember my Mother’s tutorials about design, which were:

The “Old” Rules of Design and Style

1. You need to select one “look” for your entire house and stay true to that style throughout. Think TRADITIONAL or EARLY AMERICAN.

2. When using wood pieces of furniture-all wood must be the same throughout the entire room. Maple was my Mom’s wood of choice for the kitchen and family room since both were seen at the same time. Sound familiar?

3. It’s easier to decorate your house if all the walls are painted white or beige. (See exception below in #5.) Carpet should remain neutral as well.

4. Bold colors should be used on smaller-more easily replaced-decor items. Changing your decor look is a lot less expensive if you only have to change out a few small things like pillows.

5. Wallpaper- of some kind- should cover at least 2 walls in every room. If in doubt, wallpaper the entire room from top to bottom.

Today’s Styles are no longer rigid, strict or limiting. Here’s what I mean….

The “New” Rules of Design and Style

1. “The Rules” have changed since the 70’s- just about anything goes in today’s world of interior design.

2. Decorating styles are just a matter of interpretation. Ask two different interior designers to decorate your living room and they will interpret the room’s style in different ways.

3.   And style-the way you put together color, shapes, textures-in a room has moved in many different directions. The decor style of my Mother’s generation has changed signficiantly.

And Rule #4…… (The most important one.)

Don’t be tied to any strict “rules” in regards to your personal decor. Combine styles and create an environment that reflects who you truly are.
