The Bella Girls took a trip to Barnes and Noble yesterday and stumbled upon this little gem on Green Cleaning.

So, each week we will bring you a helpful green cleaning tip. This weeks green cleaning tool is WHITE VINEGAR.

Use White Vinegar to prevent colored clothes from running in the wash:
“Use white vinegar if washing something that will bleed. Pour some white vinegar in the washing machine, fill with cold water, and then add soap and clothes.” (Green Cleaning – Natural Hints and Tips for the Eco-Friendly Household)
Happy Cleaning,
Camberley
Okay but how does it make your clothes smell? I used white vinegar on my tile floors and it leaves a weird vinegar smell. But it is safe and very “green”.

Good question. I’m thinking the laundry soap may counteract the “vinegar” smell. Maybe you could test it out for us?

I have done this many times before and it doesn’t leave your clothes smelling like vinegar! Only use about 1/2 cup to a cup of vinegar. Also, if you soak your black clothes in water and vinegar (4 parts water/ 1 part vinegar) BEFORE the first time you wash them, it keeps them from fading! Cool huh?!

Best price for your vinegar is COSTCO! Gallons of it for cheap!

Hi Liz-
That is good to know. Now that I see how many cleaning uses vinegar has, I may be able to get through a gallon in 2-3 years (instead of 10)
Alex- I too am impressed.

I add 1/2 cup vinegar to my rinse cycle and i never had a problem with my clothes smelling like vinegar. Vinegar will also prevent hardwater build up in your washing machine
